Benue Gov tasks recovery committees to take stock of government property
BY Bridget Ikyado
The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia has charged Assets Recovery Committees to take stock and provide the right ground for accountability and judicious use of all the government property by the new administration in the state.
The Governor gave the charge Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi during official inauguration of the Chairman and members of the State and Local Government Assets Recovery Committees.
Recall that on 11th June, 2023, Governor Hyacinth Alia announced the formation of Assets Recovery Committee for the state and local government areas.
Governor Alia said during the inauguration that they were embarking on the exercise due to the conviction that such was the right thing to do to ascertain the true position of all the assets of government, but not as a basis to victimize or witch-hunt anyone.
He added that, the constitution of Assets Recovery Committees was also necessary especially that the large number of cars that were hitherto seen with former government officials are now no where to be found.
The governor said they have received allegations of conversion, abuse, and outright stealing of government property and assets and, therefore, find it appropriate to set in motion the machinery to recover all that have been illegally taken that belongs to the state.
He outlined the terms of reference for the two committees to include:
a). to ascertain all assets of government, including lands, vehicles, houses, furniture and other machineries.
b). to determine all unctions of government property and assets done between 1st March – 29th May, 2023 by various government MDAs without due process.
c). to immediately recover any of the above listed assets that are wrongly disposed or sold.
The governor gave the committees two months from the date of inauguration to complete the assignment.
Responding on behalf of the committees, Hinga Biem promised their unflinching support to Governor Hyacinth Alia and their dedicated service to the State, saying they were quite aware of the enormity of the exercise.
He said they will not take for granted, the confidence that the governor and the people of Benue State have reposed in them.
