Nigeria’s political landscape momentarily set aside party divisions as Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi gathered in Daura, Katsina State, for the Fidau prayer held in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The solemn Islamic rite took place at Buhari’s private residence in Daura as part of the third-day prayers traditionally held for deceased Muslims. The event drew dignitaries from across Nigeria’s political spectrum, including governors, former ministers, lawmakers, and traditional rulers.
The prayer, led by the Sarkin Malamai of Daura, Malam Naziru Daura, featured recitations from the Holy Qur’an, invocations for the soul of the deceased, and calls for divine mercy and forgiveness.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Shettima said Buhari’s passing was a monumental loss to the country. “He was a pillar of integrity, discipline, and national service. This gathering is not just for prayer, but a recognition of the legacy he left behind,” Shettima noted.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as a leader who gave much of his life to Nigeria. Atiku joined former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and others in offering prayers at Buhari’s gravesite and interacting with his family.
Peter Obi, who was unable to attend the burial due to logistical issues, traveled to Daura to join the Fidau prayer, honoring his earlier promise. He was accompanied by Senators Ireti Kingibe and Okey Ezea, along with national coordinators of the Obidient Movement. Obi said the moment was “a time for sober reflection, not politics,” and extended condolences to the Buhari family.
Other dignitaries present included Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, former governors Aminu Masari and Tanko Al-Makura, Babagana Kingibe, Buba Marwa, and former ministers Abubakar Malami, Isa Pantami, and Hadi Sirika. The Emir of Daura, HRH Alhaji Umar Farouk, also led a delegation of traditional leaders.
The Fidau marked the conclusion of the formal Islamic mourning rites for President Buhari, who was buried in Daura on July 15, 2025, following his death on July 13. His interment included military honours and funeral prayers attended by President Tinubu and other top officials.
The presence of figures from rival political parties signaled a rare moment of unity in Nigeria’s often polarized political scene. As prayers ended, tributes continued to pour in nationwide, underscoring the enduring impact of Buhari’s controversial but influential time in office.
