WASHINGTON — On July 6, 2025, before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, former President Donald Trump harshly criticised Elon Musk’s newly launched political venture, calling it “ridiculous” and cautioning that a third party would only “add to confusion” in U.S. politics.
“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party. Starting a third party just adds to confusion… He can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”
— Trump
Musk had unveiled the formation of the “America Party” on July 5, stating it would unseat lawmakers who supported Trump’s massive tax-and-spending bill, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” The move immediately drew concern from the investment world, with Tesla shares tumbling nearly 8% amid investor fears that Musk was becoming distracted from the company’s core business .
Trump defended the two-party system, praising Republicans for their success while admitting the Democrats had “lost their way.” He argued that historic third-party efforts have failed to achieve lasting change in American politics .
He also took a swipe at Musk’s claim to rein in federal spending. Trump accused him of “going off the rails” and described Musk’s attempt as a “train wreck,” reinforcing his stance on keeping the political process streamlined and effective .
Analysts warn that Musk’s political ambitions could continue to weigh on Tesla’s performance. A report from Reuters highlighted that analysts are concerned Musk’s focus on politics could signal deeper issues at the company, with Tesla’s share price shedding billions in valuation recently .
